Is Ethernet cabling still relevant in a 5G world?

There is so much noise around 5G. So it’s probably easy to think that the days of Ethernet cabling are declining… However for commercial environments the reality is far more refined.

5G, is of course a game changer for mobile connectivity, we appreciate that it is fast, flexible and ideal for mobile users.

Yet, when it comes to the backbone of a reliable, high performance commercial network, Ethernet is still a great solution. One that we can be sure isn’t going anywhere soon!

Why is Ethernet cabling still relevant in a 5G world?

Speed is only one part of the equation…

Commercial networks demand consistency, security, bandwidth and low latency, at scale. Something that wireless networks struggle with being able to guarantee across a site.

Ethernet isn’t affected by walls, interference, or device density. Yet, is still a secure and stable option for connecting things including servers, switches computers, printers, and other devices to a Local Area Network (LAN) and/or the internet.

What we’d like to say is that rather than 5G being a replacement for Ethernet, we see it as something that can be used in conjunction with it.

We see that 5G is increasing demand for robust wired infrastructure, with the 5G access points needing cabling to perform at its best!

So, is Ethernet still relevant?

Yes!

In fact, as we’re seeing more businesses adopting IoT devices, prioritising automation and hybrid work, smart cabling design is just as important as ever.

At Data Installation & Supplies (DIS) we survey, design, install and support Ethernet infrastructure that’s futureproof, and built for today’s demands and tomorrow’s digital transformation, because even in what’s now a 5G world, the strongest connections still run via a cable.
