When you should replace an ageing UPS system

Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems, like all IT infrastructure, don’t last forever and knowing when to replace an ageing UPS is essential to staying ahead of your downtime strategy and avoiding damage to hardware or unexpected service interruptions.

There are several common signs that a UPS replacement should be something that you are thinking about:

  • Frequent battery replacements – ensure battery health is being checked regularly
  • Persistent alarms or warning lights/messages that indicate ongoing faults
  • Load growth beyond the UPS’s capacity due to expanding IT equipment
  • System age – 7–10 years is typically the maximum lifespan to guarantee performance and reliability

Ageing UPS systems may appear to be operating normally, but without regular health checks, they can fail without warning and unfortunately we see that it often happens at the worst possible time, such as during a power cut.

To support your UPS system and extend its life, it’s important to carry out regular health checks, track battery condition, and continually assess load capacity.

If you notice increasing maintenance costs or repeated fixes, it’s a strong indicator that replacement should be considered.

Delaying the replacement of an ageing UPS is a risk your organisation can’t afford. Proactive planning ensures continued protection, reliability, and peace of mind.
